Please conclude whining about this DVD’s aspect ratio. It’s not “full-screen.” It’s widescreen with the new top and bottom sections restored.
According to film historian David P. Hayes, THE STING was filmed in 4:3 (equivalent to “full-screen”) ratio because director George Roy Hill wanted it to peer like an outmoded movie. The studio (and/or the exhibitors) apparently had second thoughts about it, though, so theatrically-released prints had the top and bottom sections blocked (“matted”) to fit the widescreen format.
What you leer on this DVD is not “pan and scan” (with missing left and moral recount), but the novel format with the top and bottom restored.

I impartial bought this DVD for my father because this movie IS a classic, no matter what anyone says. But, when it came in the mail, I was surprised to search for “Chunky Cover” on the front of the box. So I did what many of you did NOT do (with the exception of reviewer cammonro dated Sept 2, 2003), I went to the Universal web place and emailed their Home Entertainment division.

From Universal Studios Home Entertainment:
‘The Sting’ is only available on DVD in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio, which in this case displays the same record information side-to-side as was seen theatrically. Also, more information is shown top-to-bottom than in the theatrical version because of the device the film was originally shot.

One process obsolete in creating movies for theatrical exhibition is to site ‘mattes’ over the top and bottom of the 35 mm film frame to alter the aspect ratio to 1.85:1 ‘Widescreen.’ To avoid murky letterboxing bars on the top and bottom of the represent when it is displayed on standard television, the recent mattes are removed in a process known as ‘Open Matte.’ (This is not to be confused with ‘Pan & Scan,’ a completely different process of transferring film to Video and DVD.) ‘Open Matte’ was passe with in the production of ‘The Sting.’
SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. For all of you complaining about how this DVD is PAN-AND-SCAN, you are Corrupt. And for all of you collected waiting for WIDESCREEN, you ALREADY HAVE IT with this DVD if you understand what Universal is saying above; you are actually seeing MORE than what you’d view in the theater version because of the “Launch Matte” process Universal former, NOT pan-and-scan.
If anyone begs to differ with these facts, argue with the source, Universal.

This was a astronomical film that really shows what money can do to people. It is also though-provoking that it is the youngest person who actually has philanthropic ideas on how to employ it.

Spurred on by the urgency that England is switching over to the Euro in a few days (not gonna happen,) freckle-faced Damien and his brother, Anthony, have to assume speedily. Damien feels the money came from God and therefore should be obsolete to back the less fortunate. Anthony feels like they *are* the less fortunate and should exhaust it to benefit themselves. Damien is also helped by unfamiliar visions of saints who counsel him. Meanwhile, Anthony is out pricing right estate.
Of course, tossing money on unsuspecting children is not really God’s style, as the boys’ father states. The money was actually tossed by a bank robber who wants it support at any cost.

This is a fun yet profound film that accurately shows greed, kindness, faith, and selfishness all resulting from the same event. The viewer is left with a overjoyed feeling and even a few introspective questions like, “What would I do if the same thing happened to me? ”
Highly recommended–
Maverick British Director Danny Boyle has really outdone himself with Millions, an absolutely terrific, loyal, and intrinsically spiritual family film about money, faith, the power of imagination, and the unquestionable ability to contain that everything is going to turn out all true in the kill. Boyle uses his trademark visual flair to manufacture a gorgeously heartfelt and emotionally fine children’s movie that is all about being ample, sometimes being abominable, and often being downright vexed.
Set in and around a fresh suburban housing development in Northern England, the memoir centers on lonesome, motherless spiritually receptive seven-year-old Damian (Alex Etel, making a sensational film debut), his hardheaded 9-year-old brother Anthony (Lewis McGibbon), and their adoring, loving father, Ronnie (James Nesbitt) . The film begins as Damian, Anthony, and Ronnie are piquant to a unique house because their frail home is pudgy of memories, where once upon a time they lived with a loving wife and mother.
Recently deceased, the missing woman hangs over this woeful threesome, and her absence shapes their days and nights. They stare this depart as a original inaugurate, a map to squash the ghosts of the past, while also looking forward to a happier and more comfortable future. Anthony is the financially savvier of the two boys – consumer orientated and realistic, he’s apt up with the latest exchange rates, as the Country is fair about to convert to Euros. Damian, quieter and more sensitive, spends the days on his bear, building a house of discarded cardboard boxes next to the local pronounce line. Possessed with a incandescent imagination, he loves reading about saints who sometimes near alive for him, and works on elevating his mum to the ranks of one of them.
Then temptation falls from the sky, literally, when a when a tall murky overstuffed bag chubby of money falls on Damian. He thinks it’s a message from God, and faced with the burden of responsibility, he decides to give as considerable of the money away to the bad as he can. Of course, the streetwise Anthony has other plans – he wants to invest it in staunch estate, or collect it transferred into Euros (he doesn’t want to pay the forty percent tax on it) . But the novel owners of the money are hot on the trudge and things initiate to accumulate very repugnant for Damien when a leather-jacketed, malevolent looking man turns up demanding that the boy to hand the money attend.
Fast paced and visually resplendent, the movie jumps along from scene to scene catching the viewer and hastily reeling us in. With a cute face that is splashed with freckles, Damien is a gravely graceful child, who believes he’s on speaking terms with the saints (they regularly appear with translucent halos on their heads) . The young actor brings to the role the queer ethereality of those children who never fit in, but curl into their hold private worlds, giggling at jokes no one else hears.
Millions has plenty of fable for both adults and children to be pleased and its sense of fun is totally infectious. The characters are all absolutely endearing and sparkling to view, including a sweetheart for Ronnie, a quirky group of Latter-day Saints, a bunch of recount robbers, an eccentric local police officer, a boogeyman, and of course all the nomadic martyrs. Mr. Boyle uses all manner of appetizing tricks to explain us what his characters see; more poignantly, he also shows us what Damien sees, and it’s a world where absurdity is an everyday occurrence and what takes places inside a young boy’s head fights for shelf station with what’s happening in the outside world. I’d have to really go 4.5 but 4 is unfair. Fletch is aid and it’s broad. Leonard Maltin should relax a puny bit and lighten up. Starting off in a mafia-controlled seafood restaurant, we acquire Fletch in hobble and the object of desire of a near-sighted Greek man.
Inheriting a Louisiana mansion, Fletch flies down next to an snide but kindly nasal-surgery candidate. Yet another classic dream sequence, and this one is not to be missed, as “Veteran White Joe”, Fletch fantasizes that his ex-wife’s lawyer, his boss and the cute gal from the office all topple at his feet. The imagery from Disney’s “Song of the South” is pure genius and you might watch “Ted Underhill” making a cameo appearance at the slay of the dream sequence (there must have been 300 extras here or a *whole* lot of CGI … check out the *very end* of the dream sequence closely) .
I like it. Again attractive women alive to here including the heavenly Julianne Phillips. This is Cleavon Little’s best work since “Blazing Saddles” (though he was substantial in the early 1970’s “Vanishing Point”) . Randall “Tex” Cobb never fails to amuse especially with his “Ben Dover” appearance as a **faux** zooerastia-obsessed transvestite necrophiliac (collect a dictionary!) . Now this movie doesn’t bash Christians, in fact there are some accurately quoted Bible verses. But it does lampoon some who misuse Christianity for money solely.

Phil Hartman is here as a Bly Bio Chem manager. Richard Libertini is serve and a small goosey it appears. Hal Holbrook is here as the vengeful attorney / land owner. And the gargantuan Geoffrey Lewis who never fails to thunder an though-provoking, if not xenophobic and myopic, character, is here. Limited is “Calculus Entropy” causing Race to introduce himself as “Geometry Fletch” and the real-estate attorney as “Miss Trigonometry Ross”. As Billy Gene King of Bug Busters, Fletch investigates Miss Ross’s house for “Reticularious Marios Cuomos” (approximately!) . Unsafe African Flesh-Eating Termites, not only do they cause the walls in Miss Ross’s house to be deplaning to an alarming degree but they jump into the ear of the sheriff’s deputy. Fortunately, Fletch gives him sound advice on how to gain those termites out. Too comic! Besides, how many movies have the terms “carpetbagger”, “toxic kill” and “The (Rolling) Stones” in them? …
I caught this movie by chance on USA Family one weekend night, and I’m satisfied that I stayed tuned! Chevy Dart plays a reporter working out of L.A. that inherits a allotment of dependable estate in the South and soon finds himself being shot at and in the middle of hilarious, wild antics. Hump dresses up as many different inconspicuous characters to secure the mysterious murderer that wants his property and him dumb. Although one will recognize that the critics here have bashed the script for its lack of stability and substance, but this older comedy truly fulfills its mission to support you laughing.

I agree with the previous review about the quality of the indicate itself, and will retain the station. But I deem details of this site have changed in cdnow/amazon since it was first announced. Earlier description, I assume, made it sound like this was a complete series, though I can’t reveal that. A mere 12 episodes for $30+ is not valid. I will follow up on descriptions more closely now, and THIS IS THE LAST PRODUCT I WILL EVER Assume FROM TIMELESS MEDIA.
Now that I have started watching the state I must add I should have rated it Zero Stars and I wish I had returned the product without taking the wrapper off. I don’t know how NBC-Universal ever allowed their name to be associated with this. Adding insult to injury, the quality is so-so on most episodes, even with Timeless’ claim to be using the best available source material and state-of-the-art processing. Two of the paltry 12 episodes have disclaimers apologizing for the abominable quality! The episodes ‘Man of Peace’ and ‘Hidden Motives’ both have the warning and the first is so dismal and blurry it’s hard to discover. Also, the episodes race no more than 23-24 minutes each so they are probably edited versions. That makes for a total of 288 minutes, not approx. 418 as claimed. Timeless has some hard to rep series on dvd, but if you want to ogle them I suggest subscribing to Netflix. That diagram you are not stuck with such lousy products.

The Deputy was a 30 cramped television western that was on NBC for two seasons in the behind fifties. Henry Fonda was billed as the star of the series which was a major coup because he was calm a major star of the silver mask. The truth is that he was rarely the central character. The title of the present was The Deputy which means it focused more on Allen Case’s character, Clay McCord. Simon Fry was a U.S. Marshall that relied on McCord to own as a peace officer when the need arose.
There are twelve episodes on three discs with more episodes coming from the second season. There are a few differences in cast between the two seasons. The first season had an aging town Marshall, Herk Lemson (Wallace Ford) & Clay’s sister, Fran (Betty Lou Keim) . In the first season Clay owned a general store & that was how he made a living. He was assisted in running it by his sister. In one episode his store is burned down & he’s left without his main source of income. The second season finds him taking over as the town Marshall of Silver City, gone is his sister & the aging Lemson. Also added to the cast was the character of Sarge (Read Morgan) who helped McCord in his duties.

As to Henry Fonda, I don’t know how or why he got roped into doing this series. It’s reminiscent of his movie, The Tin Star, yet there are some differences. In the broad majority of episodes Simon Fry would appear for two or three minutes at the beginning of the present & then the same thing at the destroy of each expose. In these twelve episodes only once is Simon Fry the main focus. So for Fonda this had to be an easy gig.
As to the quality of these episodes, buyer beware. They haven’t been remastered & the quality of the video is only so-so. As other reviewers have mentioned two of the episodes are in such awful shape that there is a disclaimer at the beginning of those particular episodes. The rest are watchable but there are a lot of problems in the film.
There are some generous guest stars in these episodes, the biggest one is Robert Redford though he was unexcited several years away from star plot. There’s also James Coburn who already had a name but had yet to carry out star residence. There are Edgar Buchanan, Alan Hale, Jr. (Skipper from Gilligan’s Island), Elisha Cook, Jr. & Whitney Blake.
This spot is overpriced but, fortunately, I got it through another seller through Amazon & it was considerably less. The product info lists that this situation is 414 minutes; I have no clue where that figure comes from. The episodes build together are approximately 300 minutes; there aren’t any bonus features, even if you throw in the logos & expose opening you serene don’t fetch halt to 414 minutes. Unless you’re a immense fan of The Deputy my recommendation is that you should pass on this space.

While I don’t reflect these films are quite up to the level of the other spacious Japanese samurai films of the 1950s (such as Sansho the Bailiff & Seven Samurai), the really broad things about the Samurai Trilogy for me were in the expedient employ of natural surroundings, the exquisite Japanese leading ladies, and above all being able to leer Toshiro Mifune starring in color.

Regarding the DVD transfer, let me first say that I am a frugal guy who does not mediate that any DVD, however valid the transfer, is ever worth 30 bucks. That said, I don’t know what all the fuss is about over the image quality on these disks. The film was not released in widescreen so the full-screen image is legal. The only scenes which are perhaps too shadowy are in the demolish of the second film, because it was filmed that plot originally! The VHS is even darker as far as I could notify. I have 20/40 vision, yet I had absolutely no scrape reading the subtitles ever in any of the three films. The image quality in general is not Jeanne d’Arc but it certainly never came end to impairing my ability to be pleased the films. Finally, there are no special features beyond theatrical trailers on any of the DVDs, but the three-pack is also priced cheaper than any other Criterion issues (less than $20/disc) so why complain!
This film marks the lovely conclusion to the Samurai Trilogy and the ascent of Musashi Miyamoto to spiritual perfection, Musashi Kensei (The Sword-Saint) . TOSHIRO MIFUNE, one of the world’s greatest actors, delivers a memorable performance as the master at the peak of his enlightenment.
Several years have goneby and Musashi Miyamoto has emerged invincible in over SIXTY duels. Interestingly enough, one sees no pride or ambition in Musashi’s manner. He turns down job offers from critical lords, including the Shogun’s martial arts teacher. In the meantime, Kojiro Sasaki (Koji Tsuruta) regrets the tiny recognition he has so far received, and seeks to duel Musashi and finish immortal fame.

Otsu (the radiant Kaoru Yachigusa), the quintessence of loyalty, has fervently sought to look Musashi once again, having parted unwillingly in Piece II. In like manner, Akemi (charming Mariko Okada) maintains hope of seeing Musashi, having through a tragic turn of events hurt up as a courtesan in a geisha house. Yet both women defy their seeming fates and separately gawk Musashi, a testament to the power of adore. Musashi himself has not forgotten his savor for Otsu, expressed in his Kwannon statuettes made in her likeness. In a poignant paradox, Musashi escapes fame and the follies of this world as a farmer, having once been in that location and dreaming of fame.
In the meantime, Kojiro’s skill is finally recognized and he comes under the utilize of the Shogun.
The romance between Musashi and the two women is tragically resolved, and a battle between Musashi and a group of bandits proves very costly. Yet Kensei maintains his poise and graciously accepts Kojiro’s challenge to a DUEL AT GANTRYU ISLAND. The perfection of Musashi’s technique evident in the fact that he carves an oar into a sword on the streak to the island, using wood against the steel of the deadly Swallow Prick. ONE OF THE MOST MOMENTOUS SCENES IN JAPANESE MOTION Describe HISTORY.
Hiroshi Inagaki once more deliviers a beautifully directed and cinematographed motion report. The color is surely the finest in the trilogy, in particular the opening sequence with Kojiro amidst the waterfall and rainbow, and the duel at dawn with its blooming red and gold -Atsushi Yasumoto’s photography is intellectual.Ikuma Dan’s come by is less triumphant and more detached and contemplative (though no less dramatic) . The pacing is more deliberate, but the strong characters and riveting storyline more than compensate.

This duel establishes MUSASHI MIYAMOTO as the Greatest Swordsman in History. After this battle, he no longer uses actual swords in combat, only wooden ones. He goes on to write A BOOK OF FIVE RINGS (a must-have), “A guide for men who want to learn strategy,” required reading for kendo students and Japanese businessmen to this day. Musashi Miyamoto Kensei represents the ability in all of us to conclude perfect belief.
